Tree Felling
Sometimes a tree will need to be removed completely, and this can be for a number of reasons. Most commonly, a tree will be deemed unsafe to people and/or property if, for example, it is in a state of decay or in a weakened condition. Other reasons for tree removal are that the tree is in an unsuitable area, affecting enjoyment of the garden, or, in the interest of conservation, a diseased tree may have to be removed to ensure neighbouring trees do not become infected.
Tree Pruning
Here at Treetops of Cheshire, we have extensive knowledge when it comes to pruning and can carry out a range of tree pruning operations. We also have a great understanding of how each tree species recovers differently after pruning so we use our vast knowledge and gentle touch to provide exactly what that individual tree needs to improve future longevity.
Tree Formative Pruning
British Standard 3998:2010 states that the main aim of formative pruning is to produce a tree which in maturity will be free from any major physical weakness and which will complement the management objectives for the site. Formative pruning is used to influence a tree's shape and structure by removing branches that will cause problems in the future. It is generally carried out on younger trees but can be utilised in later years on older trees.
Tree Crown Reduction
Crown reduction involves reducing the size of the tree's overall canopy. This is achieved by shortening the branches evenly throughout the crown, resulting in a balanced natural shape for the species and allowing the tree to regrow from the established growth points which remain on the branches. When crown reductions are carried out in the recommended way, it is sometimes very hard for somebody to be able to see that works have been completed, as the tree's natural beauty is retained. This type of crown reduction results in the least amount of reaction growth by the tree and retains its visual amenity. Both these attributes are good for the tree and its owner.
Tree Crown Lifting
Crown lifting is the removal of selected branches and limbs from the lower part of the tree's crown, thus lifting the crown's overall height from the ground. This process also assists in allowing more light to penetrate through and under the lower crown onto the ground below.
Tree Pollarding
The process of pollarding involves the removal of all leaf-bearing branches and most limbs, resulting in the formation of a single or multiple pollard knuckles, from which the tree regrows numerous new shoots. The new shoots are then periodically removed back to the knuckle on a 3-7 year cycle, depending on the vigour of the regrowth.
Tree Deadwood Removal
Deadwood removal consists of the removal of dead branches, normally for aesthetic or safety reasons. It can be a hazard to people and property, and it can also be prone to pests and diseases. Removing deadwood is a simple process that helps keep the tree healthy.
Tree Stump Grinding
When removing a tree or large shrub to ground level, a small proportion of the trunk or stem remains in the ground; this is known as the stump. A stump can remain in the ground without causing any harm. However, if the tree was diseased or you wish to replant a tree in the same location, then it is necessary to get rid of the stump. Alternatively, the stump may need to be removed to make way for a new building or fence, or purely when it is not appealing to leave an old stump in situ. The most efficient way of completely removing a stump is by using a stump grinder. Our machines are capable of grinding a stump of any size. A stump grinder leaves behind a pile of chippings and soil, which rots away over time, but if required, this can be removed and replaced with fresh topsoil.
Hedge Trimming
Formal hedges generally need trimming once a year to keep them in good condition. Overgrown hedges can need more drastic pruning to regain control of them. We understand that hedges can be a great habitat for nesting birds and other wildlife but can also be prone to pests and diseases. Treetops of Cheshire will be able to provide you with the best possible advice to achieve your desired outcome.
If your tree is covered by a Tree Preservation Order (TPO) or conservation area you must obtain written permission from your Local Planning Authority before carrying out any tree works (with some exceptions). We are experts in gaining permission from Local Authorities. In many cases, we have been able to gain permission where tree owners and other contractors have failed. Every tree and situation are different, as are the approaches taken by individual local authorities.
Ash Tree Dieback
Ash dieback is caused by a fungus called Hymenoscyphus fraxineus, which originated in Asia and spread to Europe via the global plant trade. With its windborne spores, the fungus spreads quickly, causing the crown of the tree to die back, and often resulting in the death of the tree. Infected trees become brittle, increasing the risk of them becoming unstable or shedding limbs.Much like the picture here, the first signs are that the tree looks like it is dying back from the top. All healthy trees with normal vitality should have leaf coverage right to the very tips of their stems, but with Ash dieback, the outer extremities of the tree die. You may also notice upright internal regrowth, blackened leaves and even diamond shaped lesions. If you think your Ash tree is infected then we recommend that it is looked at straight away. It may be that due to the progression of the fungus or the location of the tree, it can be retained for the time being. Unfortunately it will be a waiting game to see if your tree gets the disease and we advise our customers to keep a photo diary of the affected trees so that we can assess their progress.
